Coastal Sciences Investigation at the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center

Community Grass Gardens

Community Grass Gardens: a community restoration, outreach and education initiative aims to engage local community members in restoring natural habitats by 1) providing educational workshops about the coastal environment, restoration science, and monitoring techniques, 2) providing the local community with interactive, hands-on opportunities to reestablish dune and marsh grasses in crucial areas located within the Mississippi Coastal Preserves, 3) and building awareness about ecosystem services among the general public through local media outlets. In general, this project will provide opportunities for local communities to restore natural habitat while increasing their knowledge of local ecosystems. The first workshop will be at the Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Center

GLOBE Program

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program. Students, teachers and scientists work together on inquiry-based investigations of the environment and the Earth system. Currently, the program is represented in 110 countries where they explore subjects like: seasons & biomes, the carbon cycle, watershed dynamics, local & extreme environments, and most recently global climate change. In Mississippi the following schools participate: University of Southern Mississippi, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi.

Sea Camp at the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center
