Grow Oysters and Help Restore Mobile Bay

Contact: PJ Waters

Grow Oysters and Help Restore Mobile Bay - If you have a pier on waterfront property in Mobile or Baldwin counties, you may be a candidate for the oyster gardening program. Oyster gardeners pick up juvenile oysters from the Auburn University Shellfish Lab, hang them from a pier in an "oyster garden" and grow them until they are ready to be moved to restoration reefs in Mobile Bay. Oyster gardener volunteers help clean the water, create habitat and increase oyster populations. If you or someone you know is interested in being an oyster gardener, please call PJ Waters at the Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center and Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant at 251-438-5690.

Come Mentor with EnvironMentors!

Contact: Courtney Saari

EnvironMentors is an afterschool environmental science mentoring and college access program housed in the LSU School of the Coast and Environment. Our high school students and mentors participate in a variety of science-driven activities, including water quality monitoring, skills workshops, and environmental field trips. The ultimate goal of the program is for the students and their mentors to develop a simple environmental research project on a topic of the student's choosing to be presented at our Science Fair in April 2012. The students with the top 3 projects win all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC to compete in the National Fair. We had a very successful inaugural year, with 2 of our students winning awards and scholarships at the National EnvironMentors Science Fair. We are looking forward to another successful year, and are currently looking for new mentors! We welcome all environmental and science professionals, faculty, and graduate students in Baton Rouge to mentor one-to-one or team mentor.
